Upon publication, Kipling’s poem If met with near instantaneous public demand. To further capitalize on the poem’s popularity, Doubleday Page and Company also printed broadsides of the poem. The paper quality and colour, border designs, and copyright statements were altered slightly between printings. Kipling’s English publisher, Macmillan also published a number of broadsides of If intended for hanging and/or framing.
