Dr. Stewart was born on July 3, 1848 in Black River, St. George's Channel, Cape Breton. The son of Rev. Murdoch Stewart, a Presbyterian minister, he was educated at home and at the country school.
He moved to Scotland as a youth to work on his aunt's farm. During this period he continued his studies independently, enjoying mathematics and literature. In the Spring of 1872 he returned to Halifax to begin classes at Dalhousie University. He returned to Edinburgh in 1874 to complete and graduate in 1877 (M.B.,C.M.).
While studying at the University of Edinburgh, Dr. Stewart became acquainted with Professor Joseph Lister (later appointed Lord Lister). He Worked as Lister's dresser in 1875 and his clinical clerk from 1876-1877. Upon graduation, he moved to London with Lister to work as House Surgeon. After a two-year post, he moved back to Nova Scotia, settling in Pictou. He held a general medical practice for fifteen years.
In 1894, Dr. Stewart relocated to Halifax to work as an Operating Consultant Surgeon. He was an active member in several medical associations including: - President, Canadian Medical Association, 1905 - President, Medical Council of Canada - President, Medical Society of Nova Scotia - President, Provincial Medical Board, 1906-1916 - President, Dominion Medical Council, 1925
At the age of 67, Dr. Stewart enlisted as a volunteer and took command overseas at the No.7 Dalhousie Stationary Hospital. He remained there, living in England and France, from 1916-1919. For his distinguished service, he was decorated with C.B.E. from his Majesty the King.
After returning to Halifax, Dr. Stewart was appointed Dean of Dalhousie's Faculty of Medicine. He held this position until 1932. He passed away December 26, 1933.

Accession 63-84. The brass name plate was donated by Barbara Blauvelt in 1993. The remainder of the records were donated by Mrs. R. Smith Henderson in 1968.
