Dr. Campbell was born in Truro in 1849, educated at Truro Academy and Dalhousie University. He received his M.D.,C.M. in 1874 and began practicing medicine in Halifax shortly after graduation.
He taught at Dalhousie Medical for thirty years, working first as a Demonstrator and later as Professor of Anatomy from 1875-1885, Professor of Medical Jurisprudence in 1876, Professor of Materia Medica and Therapeutics from 1888-1889 and Professor of Medicine and Clinical Medicine.
He was appointed physician to the Victoria General Hospital in 1888 and served there until his retirement in 1911.
Dr. Campbell frequently visited Johns Hopkins, establishing friendships with the Hopkins Group, which included Osler, Simon and others.
He was married and had one son, Dr. Duncan George Joseph Campbell (M.D., Dalhousie, 1902) who died of pneumonia at age thirty. In memory of his son Dr. Campbell bequeathed his entire estate to Dalhousie thereby founding a Chair of Anatomy. He was honoured with a LL.D. from Dalhousie University. He passed away in 1917.

The fonds consists of registration cards and student tickets from Dalhousie Medical School in addition to articles about Dr. Campbell. Also included are papers regarding his medical practice such as correspondence, medical notes with sketches, personal notes and patient records. Two obituaries of Dr. Campbell are included in the fonds.
