Biographical Sketch

Thomas John (Jock) Murray was born in Halifax in 1938 and received his early education at Pictou Academy (1953-1958), completed pre-medical studies at St. Francis Xavier University (1958) and graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in 1963.

Following two years of general practice, he continued with Post-graduate studies at Victoria General Hospital (VGH) in Halifax, National Hospital at the University of London and at Toronto General and St. Michael's hospitals.

In 1969, Dr. Murray joined the staff of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University while jointly accepting appointment as a Fellow in Neurology at Victoria General Hospital.

In 1972, he was promoted to Consultant of Neurology at VGH, Camp Hill Hospital, Grace Maternity Hospital and the Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Centre. At this time he was also promoted to Assistant Professor, followed by Associate and then Professor of Medicine.

Dr. Murray was Head of the Department of Neurology for six years before being named Dean of Medicine at Dalhousie University in 1985, a post he held until 1992.

He has continued to teach at Dalhousie and is currently Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Unit at Dalhousie. He is Professor of Medical Humanities and Medicine and Neurology.

As an involved member in numerous professional activities, Dr. Murray served as the first Canadian Chair of the American College of Physicians (ACP) Board of Regents. In 1995 he was honoured with the John B. Neilson Award for outstanding contributions to the history of medicine. He founded the Dalhousie Society for History of Medicine.

He has received Honorary degrees from St. Francis Xavier and Acadia University in addition to being named Officer of the Order of Canada in 1990. He has held numerous academic and administrative posts throughout a distinguished career.
