Biographical Sketch

Dr. MacKenzie was born in West River, Pictou County in May 1880 and moved to Bedford at the age of two. He attended Dalhousie University and graduated with his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1900 followed by an M.D. degree from New York University in 1904. Following graduation he established a private medical practice in New York City. In 1920 he joined the Faculty of Medicine at NYU and became Professor of Clinical Medicine.

Dr. MacKenzie played a significant role in the expansion and development of the Bellevue-New York University Medicine Centre.

In 1947 he was awarded the NYU Alumni Meritorious Service Medal and was made Professor Emeritus of Clinical Medicine in 1951.

He was appointed to the NYU Board of Governors and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 1957. Dalhousie bestowed this same distinction upon him in 1980, conferred on his 100th birthday.

Dr. MacKenzie passed away in August 1981.

Accession 60-80, 76-81, 81-81. The records were donated by Dr. Luther MacKenzie in 1980 and by Eleanor Graves, daughter of Dr. MacKenzie, in 1981.

Fonds consists of copies of speeches, miscellaneous correspondence, notes, newspaper clippings, photographs and diplomas.
