Biographical Sketch

Educated at Mount Allison and Yale Universities, Richard C. Weldon, QC and PhD, was the first full-time instructor of Common Law in Canada, founder of Dalhousie's Law School and its first Dean of Law (1883-1914). He also served as a Member of Parliament (1887-1896) for the Conservatives.
He was born on January 19, 1849 in Sussex, NB and died on 26 Nov 1925 in Halifax, NS. He had five children (one of whom was named Richard) with his first wife Sarah Maria Tuttle (married in 1877). Just over a year after her death in 1892, he married Louisa Frances Hare with whom he had seven children.

Custodial History

With the exception of the textbook (donated in 1985 by Prof. James A. MacDougall), the papers were acquired by the Dalhousie Archives in August 1971. Their previous ownership is unknown.

Scope and Content

The fonds consists primarily of correspondence from the period during which Weldon was a Member of Parliament, and includes personal and business letters. There are also telegrams, bills, invoices, and a geometry textbook from Weldon's studies at Mount Allison.
