Biographical Sketch

The Honourable Sir Malachy Bowes Daly was born 6 February 1836 in Marchmount, Quebec, to Sir Dominick Daly and Caroline Maria Gore. He attended school in Montreal, St. Mary’s College in Oscott (England), and obtained a B.A. from St. Mary's College in Halifax. In July of 1859 he married Joanna Kenny with whom he had one daughter, Mary.

Daly was a well-known local lawyer, politician, and civil-servant. He was called to the Nova Scotia bar in 1864; served as a secretary to his father, then governor of Prince Edward Island, and a succession of lieutenant governors of Nova Scotia; ran unsuccessfully for the Nova Scotia Legislature in the early 1870s; was an elected member of the House of Commons from 1878 to 1887 where he served as the first deputy speaker; and served two terms as lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia from 1890 until his retirement in 1900. Daly was also active in numerous community organizations before and after his retirement and was knighted in 1900. He died in Halifax on 26 April 1920.

Scope and Content

Fonds consists of two guest books belonging to Daly and his wife during his time as Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia. The volumes date from 1890 to 1893 and 1897 to 1900.
