Dr. Daniel Cobb Harvey was born to John and Margaret (Cobb) Harvey in Cape Traverse, Prince Edward Island. He attended Cape Traverse School and Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown before attending Dalhousie University in 1908. In 1910 he graduated with distinction from Dalhousie with a B.A., presented the valedictory address at his convocation, and was appointed Rhodes Scholar for PEI. He graduated from Oxford University with a B.A. in 1913, completed an M.A. there in 1917, and earned a L.L.D. from Dalhousie in 1941 and another from St. Francis Xavier in 1965. He was married to fellow islander Elizabeth Winifred Ross with whom he had four children: Margaret, Daniel, Winifred, and William. Harvey died in Halifax at the age of 80 in 1965.
Harvey was an educator, author, and archivist. He began teaching history after graduating from Oxford and spent a year at McGill University; a year at Vancouver’s Britannia’s High School; moved to Winnipeg in 1915 where he taught at Wesley College for five years; taught at the University of Manitoba; became head of the History Department at the University of British Columbia in 1928; and returned to Nova Scotia in 1931 when he became archivist at the Public Archives of Nova Scotia and special lecturer in Canadian History at Dalhousie. In 1956 he retired and became archivist emeritus of Nova Scotia.
Harvey wrote and edited a number of historical books and articles related to the history of Canada, the Maritimes, and Dalhousie University. He was also actively involved with a number of historical organizations and served as president of the Canadian Historical Association and the Nova Scotia Historical Society; was a member of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada; and was on the editorial boards of the Canadian Geographical Journal, the Canadian Historical Review, and the Dalhousie Review. He was elected fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1928, was awarded the Tyrrell Medal in 1942 to recognize his outstanding work in Canadian history, and served as president of the organization’s Academy of Social Sciences in 1945.

This fonds consists of correspondence to Harvey from Dr. A. MacMechan and his wife; a recommendation letter from MacMechan to Edwin Laftus; and a letter from George W. Robinson, Cambridge, to Dr. MacMechan. The fonds also consists of published historical articles and books by Daniel Harvey.
