Biographical Sketch

William Jarvis McCurdy (1904-1988) obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Dalhousie in 1926 and was chair of the Dalhousie Class of 1926. He went on to do his PhD in philosophy at Harvard and became a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Toronto.

Custodial History

The fonds was accessioned in two parts – 1978 and 1991. The donor of the first accession is unknown; Mrs. Avis M. McCurdy, wife of Jarvis McCurdy, donated the second in 1991.

Scope and Content

Fonds consists of correspondence and records pertaining to the Dalhousie Class of 1926 (Bachelor of Arts) and Jarvis McCurdy from 1923 to 1988.
The Class of 1926 Minute Book covers the period 1923 to 1926 with additional entries that give the account of the attendees and meetings of the 50th and 60th class reunions. Financial records include class contributions and invoice payments; correspondence includes letters exchanged with Jarvis McCurdy and various classmates, letters to Elinor Barnstead and a letter from Elinor Barnstead to Wilfrid Creighton.
Items specifically related to Jarvis McCurdy include a newspaper announcement of his 1929 engagement to Avis Marshall, his 1931 doctoral thesis to Harvard University, Boston, MA, and a program for the memorial for him in 1988.
