Biographical Sketch

Arthur Stanley Mackenzie (1865-1938) was an important figure in education in Nova Scotia for 40 years. He was a Professor of Physics at Bryn Mawr College (1891-1905); Professor of Physics at Dalhousie University (1905-1910); President of Dalhousie University (1911-1931) and President of Nova Scotia Economic Council (1937).

Born at Pictou, Nova Scotia on September 20, 1865, A. Stanley Mackenzie was the son of George Augustus and Catherine Denoon (Fogo) Mackenzie. A. Stanley Mackenzie was educated in Public Schools, Pictou, New Glasgow and Halifax. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Dalhousie University with a George Munro Bursary and exhibition, the Sir William Young gold medal and honours in Mathematics and Mathematical Physics in 1885. He then pursued his doctorate at Johns Hopkins University, graduating in 1894. Mackenzie married Mary Lewis Taylor, daughter of the late Franklin Taylor, in Indianapolis, in May 1895.

Following his university studies, Dr. Mackenzie worked as an Assistant Master at Yarmouth Seminary, Nova Scotia from 1885 to 1887. He began his teaching career at Dalhousie as a Tutor in Mathematics and Physics (1887-1889) and spent two years (1889-1891) at Johns Hopkins University as a scholar and fellow in Physics. He also spent a year doing research under Sir Joseph J. Thomson of Cavendish Laboratories, at Cambridge University in 1904.

Appointed President of Dalhousie University in 1911, he remained in that position for another twenty years. Mackenzie was widely recognized for his research contributions and was a Member of Nova Scotia Institute of Science, American Physical Society, and National Research Council of Canada; he was a Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1908. A. Stanley Mackenzie also took an active role in his community in the role of President of Ashburn Golf and of Halifax Curling. Arthur Stanley Mackenzie died in Halifax, Nova Scotia on October 2, 1938.

Custodial History

W. J. Archibald, Professor of Physics at Dalhousie University donated some papers of Arthur Stanley Mackenzie including published articles and correspondence with colleagues and organizations in 1976. Marjorie King, Stanley’s daughter, donated additional papers and diaries in the 1980s. In September 1990, Mackenzie's papers stored at Physics Department of Dalhousie were transferred by Professor Bridget Trim to the University Archives.

Scope and Content

The fonds consists of correspondence (1885-1931), publications (1894-1927), addresses (1889-1921), unpublished documents (1881-1923) which include unpublished articles, a large number of lecture notes (1881-1923), research notes (1887-n.d.) and lab books (1887-1909). Other course materials include course examination papers, written and collected by Dr. Mackenzie. Other materials in this fonds pertaining to Dr. Mackenzie’s personal life include his diaries (1883-1909), honours, pictures and memorabilia (1938-1949).
