Biographical Sketch

Sir Charles Tupper was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, 2 July 1821. He was educated at Horton Academy in Wolfville and graduated from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1843 as an M.D. He returned to Canada shortly thereafter and began practicing in Amherst. In 1846 he married Frances Morse with whom he had six children.

Tupper’s lengthy political career began in 1855 when he ran and won as a conservative in a provincial election. He eventually served as premier of Nova Scotia between 1864 and 1867 and was largely responsible for the province joining confederation. In 1867 Tupper successfully ran for parliament and became an important figure in the federal political arena. He led the Conservative Party from 1896 to 1901 and served briefly as the country’s prime minister from 1 May 1896 to 8 July 1896. Tupper died in England on 30 October 1915.
