ImX Communications Inc. was a Halifax-based film and television production company in 1998, created by company
President, Christopher Zimmer. His original company Imagex was incorporated in 1985 and was placed under the larger umbrella
of imX Communications in 1998 to produce feature films, made for television movies, documentaries and animation. The feature
films Margaret's Museum and New Waterford Girl received considerable critical acclaim. Zimmer had a thorough grounding in television, advertising and film production in
New York and Los Angeles. Zimmer has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Atlantic Film Festival, the Canadian Film
and TV Producers Association, and on the Canadian Government's Advisory Committee on Feature Films. Along with the Donovan
brothers, Zimmer has played a major role in transforming Halifax into a major Canadian entertainment production centre.
ImX has co-produced and fully produced feature films, animated productions, television series and features. The company has
also developed service and executive productions. ImX has become known for its many co-productions with international companies
in the U.K., Spain, Germany, Poland, France, U.S.A., Netherlands, Venezuela and Belgium. ImX also had a base in St. John's,
Newfoundland for several years, was a partner in the Double Helix Animation Studios (Halifax and Sydney), and the CineSite
Seattle International Film Festival, New York Film festival, Taos Talking Picture Film Festival, Biarritz Film Festival, Berlin
Film Festival, Havana International Film Festival, and of course the Montreal Film Festival, the Toronto Film Festival, the
Vancouver International Film Festival and the Atlantic Film Festival. ImX was bought by DHX Media in July 2008. Film & TV
Production Centre also in Halifax. ImX productions are also noted for authentic settings, Canadian stories, and use of local
and Canadian talent.
Both Zimmer and imX films have earned numerous industry awards. Some of these include over 25 Gemini nominations, 7 Leo Awards,
and awards from the Seattle International Film Festival, New York Film festival, Taos Talking Picture Film Festival, Biarritz
Film Festival, Berlin Film Festival, Havana International Film Festival, and of course the Montreal Film Festival, the Toronto
International Film Festival, the Vancouver International Film Festival and the Atlantic Film Festival. imX was bought by DHX
Media in July 2008.
Custodial HistoryRecords were acquired in two accessions (accession #2008-051 and #2008-054). The bulk of the materials were first acquired
and include in textual materials, still and moving image materials, audio materials, posters and publications. The second
accession contained film and material from The Divine Ryans.

Scope and ContentThis fonds consists of records regarding imX's corporate operations, productions and other projects between 1985 and 2008.
Corporate operations include imX Communications and its subsidiary companies: ImageX, Helix Animation, and North/Northeast
Ventures. Film productions include theatrical full-length or short films, including documentaries. Television productions
include made-for-television movies and documentaries, stand-alone productions, and series. Animated productions include feature
length, television series and shorts.
This fonds comprises 94 series which are arranged alphabetically by the name of the corporate entity, production and project.
Textual files contain a wide range of documents including scripts, call sheets and daily production reports, funding applications,
cast and crew employment contracts, notes on location scouting, co-production agreements, marketing plans, budgets, music
cue sheets, insurance coverage, and correspondence. Electronic mail (4.57 GB) downloaded from the e-mail server at imX corporate
headquarters in Halifax, contains 32,134 individual messages in 1054 folders covering all aspects of corporate operations
and business transactions. There are also 23,368 electronic files (15.6GB) that support the activities of imX, imageX, and
Helix Animation documents in use between 1990 and 2008. Together with the text files they represent a complete record of the
activities of imX Communications and its affiliates.
Most corporate records have been retained in order to provide a full picture of what it is like to run a film production company
in Nova Scotia. In addition, the records for three feature film productions: The Divine Ryans, Margaret's Museum, and Love and Death on Long Island have also been fully retained. 134 linear feet of textual material was not retained.
ArrangementThe arrangement structure is based on the original arrangement; however, some groupings were imposed to provide better access
to the materials. The imX Communications Inc. fonds is arranged into ninety-six series and based on corporate, production
or project names. Most files follow the original structure imposed by imX and grouped under one of the following file types,
admin for administrative, financial, legal, creative, or p&a for publicity and advertising. Production, photographic material
and audiovisual material sub-series also were added.

tells the story of a Maritime woman and her daughter coming home from British Columbia and offers the 1990's response to what
happens after Maritimers "go down the road". The 96-minute drama was co-produced by Imagex, directed by Nicholas Kendall and
written by Peter Behrens. The cast starred Jennifer Dale, Mia Kirshner, and Gregory Harrison. The film also featured Adam
Beach early in his career.

Scope and Content:
This series consists of the records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, legal, production, publicity and
marketing activities of this project. A feature film set in the 1960's St. John's, Newfoundland, The Divine Ryans was based
on the Wayne Johnston novel of the same name, and was the first of Johnson's novels to be made into a feature film. The 90-minute
drama tells the story of how young Draper Doyle tries to solve the mystery of his father's death with the help of an eccentric
uncle. Johnston also wrote the screenplay. The Divine Ryans was directed by Stephen Reynolds and starred Pete Postlethwaite,
Robert Joy, Wendel Meldrum, Mary Walsh and Jordan Harvey. It was nominated for 3 Genies and won the Best Actor Award for Jordan
Harvey and Best Atlantic Canadian Screenwriting at the Atlantic Film Festival. It was shown at film festivals in Dublin, Vancouver,
and Sedona, among others. Files for this production have been fully retained.

Scope and Content:

marketing activities of Seats 3A & 3C film productions. This innovative film series tells contemporary stories in low-budget,
digital, feature-film formats developed and 100% owned by Imagex. There are four films in this series: Dragonwheel, Love that
Boy, Past Perfect and The Wild Dogs.
"Dragonwheel," a romantic comedy set in Halifax, Mexico City, Barcelona, Tokyo and on flights in between, was the directing
debut for Tricia Fish, writer of New Waterford Girl. Fish also wrote the screenplay. "Dragonwheel" starred Graham Gavine and
Krista MacDonald.
"Love That Boy" tells the quirky story of an over-achieving, soon-to-be college graduate, improbably falling in love with
her 14-year-old neighbour. The 85-minute drama was written by Andrea Dorfman and Jennifer Deyell, directed by Andrea Dorfman,
and the cast included Nadia Litz, Adrien Dixon, Nicki Barnett, PJ Crosby and Dax Ravina.
"Past Perfect" follows two passengers sitting in adjoining seats, Seats 3a and 3c, on a flight from Vancouver to Halifax who
fall in love, and then meet two years later. The film was the directorial debut for Daniel MacIvor, who also wrote the scrip.
The 82-minute drama cast included Daniel McIvor, Rebecca Jenkins and Maury Chaykin. Past Perfect won the award for Outstanding
Performance as an actor at the Atlantic Film Festival in 2002.
"The Wild Dogs" is set and photographed in contemporary Bucharest and brings together the stories of a reluctant city dog-catcher,
a diplomat's wife, and a visiting Canadian pornographer. It was directed and written by Thom Fitzgerald who also played a
leading on-camera role. The 97-minute drama starred Alberta Watson, David Hayman, Rachel Blanchard, Thom Fitzgerald and Mihai
Calota. It won awards at the 2002 Atlantic Film Festival for Best Canadian Feature, Best Direction, Excellence in Sound Design
and Excellence in Editing.

set in the foothills of the Andes. It tells the story of a widowed father and son surviving against the cruelty of their neighbour.
The 93 minute drama was written and directed by the Venezuelan director, Alberto Arvelo and featured the Canadian actor, Gabriel
Arcand. The cast also included Imanol Arias and Leandro Arvelo. It won awards at film festivals in Biarritz, Heulva, Havana,
Mons, Cartagena and Friburg and was selected as Venezuela's official entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards
in 2002.
