Administrative History

The Dalhousie Student Government started in approximately 1863. It served to represent the diverse interests of Dalhousie students and to be a provider of valued services for students. In 1870, the assembly was called the General Student Meeting and at the turn of the century it was renamed the University Students Council. In the early days, Dalhousie Student Committees carried out specific duties such as financial control, organizing Munro Day celebrations and annual dinners, and operating the Reading Room.

In 1870 the Dalhousie Medical Students Society was formed, and nine years later, SODALES (the Dalhousie Debating Society) was founded. The Engineering Students Society was formed in November 1905.

In 1913, the Constitution of the University Students Council was developed. The new Council had control of all students’ affairs and organizations. In 1928, the Students Council employed a property man for the Glee Club, a position which marked the beginning of student employment by the student government at Dalhousie.

The Dalhousie Student Union fonds has extensive collections of records from the year 1968 to 1983. On November 8, 1968, the Student Union Building was opened. In July 1970, Dalhousie Student Legal Aid opened, and five Dalhousie Law School students initially staffed it. Later, a newsletter of the Student Union “Dispatch” was published and the paper remained in publication until 1989. The Dalhousie Student Union had links with the Canadian Union of Students which was formed in the late 1920s. The union had links with Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) as well, which was formed in 1981. It withdrew from CFS in 1994. The Dalhousie Student Union had ties to other student organizations, such as the National Federation of Canadian University Students, the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations, the Acadian Students Union, Saint Mary University Students Association, and the Saint Francis Xavier Student Union.
