Administrative History

The Dalhousie Women's Club was established in 1951, largely through the efforts of Mrs. H. H. Macdonald and Mrs. J. R. Longard who were on the Board of Dalhousie University. The purpose of the club was to promote acquaintance and friendship among the women of Dalhousie University, Kings College and affiliated institutions. Annual tea parties, dances, fashion shows, guest lectures and field trips provided an opportunity for club members and their families to convene. In addition, the club organised a special luncheon each September. This luncheon, often referred to as the "Newcomers Party," allowed the wives of new faculty members to meet other women in the Dalhousie community.

During the 1960's the DWC began forming interest groups which encouraged women with similar interests to meet regularly. Two of the most popular were the book club, in which members met monthly to discuss a particular book, and the "out to lunch" club, in which members would pick a different restaurant to try every few weeks.

The Dalhousie Women's Club ceased operation in 1995.
