Peer Reviewed Journals

What is a peer reviewed journal?

Articles, before they are published in a peer reviewed journal, must be reviewed by experts in the field . These journals may also be called "refereed journals".

How do you identify a peer reviewed or refereed journal?

In many paper journals the Information for Authors/Submission Guidelines/Notes to Contributors/Submission Guidelines/Notes to Contributors section will often state that the journal is peer reviewed.

In many electronic journals you can click on the "About" the publication and/or "Information for Authors" sections from the latest issue, to find out if it is a peer reviewed journal.

When that doesn't work:

Health databases that identify peer reviewed journals:

  • CINAHL

    - Click on "Journal Directory," scroll down to the "Journal Category/Subsets" area, and click on "Peer Reviewed."
  • PsychINFO

    - Limits; Peer Reviewed/Scholarly Journals box

Health databases that do NOT identify peer reviewed journals include:

  • SportDiscus
After completing your search, click on "Refine Search", go to the pulldown menu titled "Database Subset" and select "Peer Reviewed" or "Refereed". Then click on the "Search" button to apply the peer review limit (and any others you selected) to your current search.

  • Cochrane (Note: all systematic reviews in Cochrane are peer reviewed)

Other Resources for identifying Peer Review:

  • Ulrich's Periodicals Directory.
