Who can borrow a laptop?
All currently registered Dalhousie students with valid DalCard whose library record is in good standing. All borrowers must sign a Laptop Loan Registration Agreement.
Where can I borrow a laptop?
Laptops may be borrowed at the Circulation Desk of the Kellogg Health Sciences Library.
How long can I borrow a laptop?
Maximum loan period for a laptop is 3 hours. Laptops must be returned to the staff at the Circulation Desk at the end of the 3 hours or 30 minutes prior to library closing - whichever comes first.
Can I renew a laptop loan?
Yes, if there is no one waiting for a laptop you may renew in person or by phone at the Kellogg Library Circulation Desk. Online renewals are NOT available.
What are the fines for late return of a laptop?
A late fine of $20.00 per hour will be charged on all laptops up to a maximum of $200.00. Laptops not returned by close of the following day, will be considered lost and you will be charged a replacement fee of $1500.00.
Where can I return a laptop?
Laptops borrowed from the Kellogg Library must be returned to a staff member at the Kellogg Library Circulation Desk.
Can laptops be taken outside the library?
Yes.
Who is responsible for theft, damage or loss of the laptop
when I sign it out?
YOU ARE. You are financially responsible for the laptop and accessories while signed out in your name, as agreed to when you signed the Laptop Loan Registration Agreement. In the case of damage or loss, you will be charged up to $1500.00 for repair or replacement. Component replacement fees: Power supply $125.00, Lock $45.00, Case $50.00 Mouse $15.00.
Can personal software and documents be saved
on the laptop?
No. When the laptop is shut-down all files are erased. Your documents should be saved to a USB key, your G: DRIVE or email them to yourself. There is no way to recover your work once the laptop is shut down/restarted. The library is not responsible for the loss or damage to any of your files.
Can I access the Internet from the laptop?
Yes.
Where can I get information about connecting to the university's wireless network and accessing my G: drive?
Each laptop case comes with an instruction sheet for connecting to the wireless network and accessing your G: drive. Instructions are also on the desktop of each laptop. If you have problems, help is provided by the Circulation Desk or Information Desk staff.
What comes with the laptop?
Each laptop comes with a power cord, power supply, mouse, lock and carrying case.
What software is available on the laptop?
The laptops run on Windows XP and have the same software as the Kellogg Library Learning Commons computers such as
Microsoft Office Suite, and some statistical packages.
Can I print from the laptop?
Yes. Print jobs are sent to the Print Release Stations in the Learning Commons by default.
Can I book a laptop in advance?
No. Advance bookings/holds for laptops will not be accepted. Laptop loans are on a first come, first served basis.
Are there power outlets available in the Library for using the laptop?
Yes, there are electrical outlets throughout the library. Please do not unplug library equipment to plug in the laptop.
Can I use the laptop on battery power?
Yes, but check the battery level by clicking on the battery icon (bottom right of the screen) which indicates the remaining battery life. Battery life is limited and we recommend plugging the laptop into an electrical outlet.
Why are laptops due back 30 minutes before the Circulation Desk closes at the end of the day?
For maintenance purposes, we request that laptops be returned on time or 30 minutes before the library closes, whichever comes first.
What if I need help?
We expect you to be familiar with the hardware and software. The Information and Circulation Desks are available to help troubleshoot with problems you may encounter. Some issues may have to be referred to our Systems staff.
