Residents enjoy full library privileges at all Dalhousie University libraries. Most services, including mediated database searching, access to electronic journals and texts, and document delivery, are also available remotely via the Web. Explore the Kellogg Library's home page at: www.library.dal.ca/kellogg

Residents based outside the Halifax-Dartmouth area may also use the Library's web-based resources (see Remote Access to Library Resources below). Hospital-based residents may also use the Library's resources indirectly through that hospital's own library.

Through the Library's web site, residents have access to hundreds of databases and thousands of electronic books and journals.

In the Library, residents have access to computer workstations with full access to productivity software (complete Microsoft Office Suite and statistical and image software) and scanners. The Library is also a wireless zone for laptops and mobiles.

Access to our Collections

Electronic Resources
There is no password requirement to access our electronic resources from on campus. However, to access these resources from remote (off-campus) locations you will be prompted to authenticate yourself as a Dalhousie user. This requires your Dal NetID username and password. (Note: this is not the same as your tupdean2 or Dal Medix logins.) For more information, visit our remote access page. Don't know your Dal NetID, or need to activate your it? Visit the NetID and Password Web Page. You will have the opportunity to set your password here as well. If further assistance is needed call Dal's IT Help Desk at 494-2376 or toll free at: 1-800-869-3931

Print Resources
Print collections are located on the first and second floors of the Kellogg Library. The pharmacy collection is located in the Burbidge Building next door on College St. Print journals do not circulate. Books in our general collection normally circulate for 3 weeks, although you may request a faculty loan which allows you a much longer borrowing period. Renewals may be done online through Novanet.

Novanet Online Catalogue

To find out what is in the Dalhousie Libraries collection, search the Novanet catalogue (searchable from any of the Libraries' webpages). Novanet also lists resources from most other post-secondary institutions in Nova Scotia. When searching by subject for medical resources held at the Kellogg Library, use the MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) search option.

Residents based outside the Halifax area can also obtain an Atlantic Scholarly Information Network (ASIN) card from the Kellogg Library, which will permit them to borrow materials directly from all university libraries in Canada. Residents also have library privileges at the health sciences library of the hospital to which they are assigned.

Loan Policies

Books:
A book loan is for 3 weeks. Books may be renewed twice if no other borrower is waiting for them. Items are subject to early recall if required for Reserve or by another user.
Renewals can be made in person at any Novanet library, or online. Overdue books must be returned to the Library before they can be renewed.

Reserve materials:
Loan periods range from 2 hours to 1 week, depending on the item. Renewals are possible but must be made in person.

Serials/Journals:
Most journals do not circulate. Self-service photocopiers are available in the Library. Exceptions: a few monograph-like journals (e.g., Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences) can be borrowed on request. Loan period: 3 days.

Fines are calculated as of the date the material is returned to the Kellogg Library and may be paid at the circulation desk in the Kellogg Library or any other Novanet library. Failure to return books or to pay fines will result in the loss of library privileges.

Document Delivery Services

The Document Delivery service supports teaching, learning and research needs of Dalhousie students, staff and faculty by obtaining the loan of books and copies of articles and other research material not available from any Novanet member library. There is no charge to Dalhousie faculty, staff and students for this service and requests may be submitted using our online request form. Click here for further information and the request form . Delivery of journal articles is by email and usually take 1-3 business days.

You will also be able to use the document delivery service of the local hospital library if they provide that service.

Library Instruction Services

The Kellogg Library offers specialized instructional programs for individuals as well as sessions tailored to specific groups or classes. The Kellogg supports information literacy across the health sciences curriculum including:

  • basic introduction to major biomedical informations sources
  • comprehensive instruction in research methods to meet the needs of course requirements
  • one-on-one consultations with researchers at all levels of expertise
  • advice and help on doing evidence-based searches for systematic reviews

Reference and Research Assistance

The Kellogg Library offers professional reference assistance in researching basic and advanced health sciences questions. Walk in, phone, email or live Chat help is available. Consultation appointments can be arranged on request. Reference staff will also do mediated searches of health sciences bibiographic databases for a fee.

Bibliographic Citation Management (RefWorks)

RefWorks is a web-based citation manager that allows you to compile, edit and format bibliographies by importing references directly from online databases, or by entering them manually and inserting them into your finished paper in the citation style of your choice (eg. APA, Vancouver Style, etc.). This service is provided to you for free by Dalhousie University Libraries.

For more information and to set up an account, please see our RefWorks webpage. For instruction on how to use RefWorks, see the contact info below.

Remote Access

Attempting to access a licensed Dalhousie resource (databases, e-journals, e-books, etc.) from an off-campus location will trigger a login page. Type in your Dal NetID username and the password associated with that. Usually, this is the same as your Dalhousie email account and for your my.dal.ca access. (Note: This is not the same as your Dal Medix username.)

Don't know your NetID? Look it up here! (Note: You need to know your Dalhousie Banner ID number - the B00xxxxxx number at the top of your Dal ID card or in your letter of acceptance.)

For more information and help, see the Libraries Remote Access information page.
