Atlantic Scholarly Information Network (ASIN)

The ASIN Borrower's Card may be used to borrow material in person from any CAUL/CDBUA institutions in the Atlantic Provinces as well as other Canadian University libraries which participate in the Canadian University Reciprocal Borrowing Agreement.

Procedure

ASIN cards, for Dalhousie students, faculty and staff in good standing, may be obtained at the Circulation Desk of any Dalhousie Library. Distance Education Students may request an ASIN card when they register their library barcode (please see Distance Services item #2).  ASIN cards will not be issued to the general public (users who possess an Off-Campus borrower's card) or to visiting scholars.

Policies

The lending library will lend material to ASIN cardholders based on its own lending policies. For example, a Dalhousie undergraduate student visiting the Acadia University library will be lent material on the terms that apply to an undergraduate student at Acadia. Dalhousie students, faculty and staff who obtain an ASIN Card are responsible for following the regulations and policies of the library from which they have borrowed materials including any charges or fines that they may incur.

The ASIN model is "Borrow anywhere - Return anywhere." Users may return borrowed materials to any ASIN library. However it is the responsibility of the borrower to return material directly to other CURBA libraries.

Services for ASIN Users

  • in-person borrowing of circulating library materials (excludes reserve materials) is available at all Novanet libraries with the exception of the Nova Scotia Community College libraries
  • renewals are available on materials that have not been requested by other users (3 renewal limit at Killam and Sexton libraries; 2 renewal limit at Kellogg and Law libraries)
  • holds may be placed on materials that are currently signed out however recalls are not available
  • in-person access to e-resources via express stations
  • return anywhere within the ASIN libraries (e.g. borrow from Dal, return to MUN)
  • Full Dalhousie document delivery privileges may be extended as a courtesy to ASIN students and faculty who are living in the Metro area for an extended period but who are full affiliates of other non-Metro Atlantic Universities. Enquiries about the service may be made at the Circulation Desk of any Dalhousie Library. Registration of your ASIN card at the Circulation desk is required.

NOTE: The Atlantic Scholarly Information Network (ASIN) Borrower's Card was implemented by the seventeen members of the Council of Atlantic University Libraries/Conseil des Directeurs(trices) de Bibliotheque des Universitees de l'Atlantique (CAUL/CDBUA).
