About
the Project![]() The Thomas H. Raddall Digital Photo Collection, funded by a grant from the Birks Family Foundation, is a selection of electronic photographs, which document the life and work of one of Nova Scotia's most renowned authors and historical researchers. These photographs have been digitalized from the Thomas H. Raddall Fond, held at the Dalhousie University Archives. The Thomas H. Raddall Collection Dalhousie University holds the extensive archival collection of Thomas H. Raddall (1903-1994). This collection includes the Nova Scotian author's manuscripts, letters, broadcasts, stories and photographs. The photograph series contains approximately 1600 photographs and negatives, dating from 1870 to 1987, which document events in which Raddall participated, places he lived or visited, and his family and friends. Some photographs were used as research material, many of which may be of great interest to those studying Nova Scotian, and in particular Queen's County, history. In 1999, the Dalhousie University Archives received funding from the Birks Family Foundation to create an electronic archive of the Thomas H. Raddall Collection, making this valuable resource more accessible. Since then the Thomas H. Raddall Electronic Archive Project allows visitors to search and view aproximately fifty letters written by or to Raddall, and to search an extensive finding aid of the complete Raddall collection. A comprehensive bibliographic resource of his work can also be found. This latest phase of the project makes available a selection of digitalized photos from the 1600 photographs in the collection. Image Selection In deciding what photos would be included in the Thomas H. Raddall Digital Photo Collection, the project manager examined the four photograph albums and the great number of filed loose photos, searching for an interesting and comprehensive way to interpret the importance of such a resourceful collection and how categorical divisions could best meet the needs of researchers. From the onset it was very obvious that the photographs told a vivid, biographical account of Thomas H. Raddall; a pictorial story of the man and his work. To recapture this story, the digital collection provides a timeline of photos, noting important events, people and places in Raddall's life. The timeline is divided into six eras, based from the chapters of Raddall's autobiography, In My Times. Secondly, the photo collection is a valuable tool for those, like Raddall, who holds a curious interest in the history and geography of Nova Scotia -- particularly Sable Island, Liverpool and Queen's County, in telegraphy, shipping and hunting. The collection was subdivided into useful subject categories to aid viewers in finding photographs on particular research topics. Each subject contains a brief description of itself and its relevance to Raddall's life, and links to the selected photos of that category. All photos appearing in this digital collection were chosen on the basis of quality and subject presentation. Imaging and Technology The photographs in this electronic collection were digitalized using a HP Scanjet C7716, at a resolution of 72 dpi and saved in Joint Photograpic Experts Group (JPEG) format. Because of their small size and poorer quality, some photographs were scanned at 150 dpi to ensure a clearer reproduction. Minor size and color adjustments were made using Adobe Photoshop CS 8.0. Other software used included: HP Precision Scan Pro 3.02, Netscape 7.02, Internet Explorer 6.0, Dreamweaver 4.0 and Microsoft Wordpad. Copyright Use and Restrictions Dalhousie University holds copyright to all material, including the photographs, in the Thomas H. Raddall collection. No photo may be copied or used in any form without our expressed consent. For information on the use of these images, please contact the Dalhousie Archives. Erin Greeno, Project Manager, 2004 |
