Introduction
This digital collection offers an overview
of the history of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University.
The collection was initiated, in part, as
a response to the many requests received by the Dalhousie University
Archives from scholars, researchers, and the general public for historical
information concerning medical education at the university.
Up until now, access to this archival material
has not been possible due to a lack of funding for the appraisal,
arrangement and description of the backlog of the Faculty's records.
With the completion of archival appraisal during the summer of 2001
(courtesy of a grant from the Hannah Institute), the next logical
step was the collation of the material into a digital collection focusing
upon the Faculty in its capacity as the only medical teaching and
training facility in the Maritimes.
The collection also serves as a prototype
for a possible joint project between the Dalhousie Archives and the
W.K. Kellogg Health Sciences Library. As such, the source material
has been drawn from the resources of both departments at the University.
