Hints and Tips for Browsing and Searching the Collection
When browsing, choose your desired location from the droplist, and then click "Go". All of the photographs from that location will be listed. If you are unsure of the location, try searching using the keyword search.

The keyword search will take the words you type in and search the collection for instances of those words in the category you have selected (Title, Date, Photographic or Geographic Subject and Description). It will search phrases such as man in hat or an exact word such as cricket.

If you do not find what you're looking for using the keyword search, try using alternate spellings of your keyword. Try McDonald for MacDonald, or McKinnen for MacKinnon. Because names were often spelled phonetically and written out by hand on the glass negatives, they may have been misspelled and so it is best to try every logical combination.

Our search engine does not have a wildcard (* or !) option. You can, however, search for the root of a word ha for hand or hat, bo for boat or boot, etc.

Because the search engine will only search for exact phrases or a single word, searching for hat AND collar will not bring up results which have both collar as well as hat in the description. It will instead yield results with the phrase "hat and collar" in them. You must search for different search terms seperately.

Searches are not case sensitive. Searching for hockey, Hockey or HoCKeY will yield the same results.
